Primarily focusing on Nabe, which means literally POT in Japanese, my wife and I really enjoyed our experience here, from the ambience to the food.

The small facade of Ichiriki belies a roomy interior, which is nicely sectioned off in neat compartments on the left side while the rooms reserved for large parties are positioned on the right side. It's clean, modern and comfortable.

I have to preface my review by admitting that I am not a fan of shabu shabu, which to me is generally very bland. And my palate usually tires of the ubiquitous ponzu sauce that comes with every shabu shabu very quickly. In other words, I can stay home, boil some water, toss in some veggies and meat, dip them in ponzu, and pretty much have the same meal. BORING.

The reason I like Nabe much more than shabu shabu is that it uses soup base rather than plain water. That makes all the difference in the world to me.

I figured why not start with their signature dish, Ichiriki Nabe ($21.95). If I didn't enjoy it, I surmised I wouldn't like anything else I and therefore wouldn't have to return. Ichiriki Nabe used a shoyu based stock and it came 15 high quality ingredients with which to add. Some of it included enoki & shiitake mushrooms, tofu, bok choy, Chinese cabbage, slices of tender beef, shrimp, scallops, and their tasty homemade meatballs. All the ingredients, infused with enough depth and flavor from the broth, didn't really require anything else. But just in case, the restaurant provides ponzu and chili sauce for dipping as back up.

My wife had the Spicy Pirikara Nabe ($20.95), which was pretty much the same thing except the soup base was augmented with garlic and red peppers. Surprisingly, not everything was a la carte as in most Japanese restaurants... their Nabe entrees included 2 choices of starch: Either rice, udon or ramen.

Side orders included Korokke (Japanese version of croquette) with tonkatsu sauce and calamari. The Korokke I found plain, but the lightly battered squid was nice and crispy on the outside while still tender on the inside.

Far better than any shabu shabu I've ever had, Ichiriki's Nabe is not too shabby shabby. I'll be back again.
